Houston neighbors lose 5 feet of backyard: South Acres/Crestmont residents draw line with Sandrock Gardens developers

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – A neighborhood on the south side of Houston may get smaller so that the new neighborhood can grow.

Residents of Fairgreen Lane in the South Acres/Crestmont Park area received mail that their fences were on developer property, so the company will need to remove homeowners’ fences and build new ones closer to residents’ back doors at any time. Expenses.

“I refuse to let that happen,” said homeowner Elizabeth Brannon, who has owned her home for 45 years.

There was no fence when Brannon said she bought the property. She added that a surveyor went out and decided where the fence could and could not go.

“They cleared the ground and we went putting up our fence,” Brannon said.

So when she received a letter from the developer saying her fence was in the wrong place, and that developers building a subsection on the vacant land behind her would reclaim over five feet of her backyard, she felt like it couldn’t be true.

“My husband and I worked for this. We earned this, just to let someone in and let them take it from us?” Brannon said.

Curtis Harris, who has lived in his home for two decades, also received a letter. His mother-in-law lived there before him.

“That’s a lot of my land,” Harris said.

If the developers want to tear down his fence and put up a new one, he says that’s fine. He adds that tearing down the fence and taking away the yardage would also take away the memories.

“We’re going to go over the copper tax on it and find out what happens,” Harris said.

ABC13 spoke to the developers, Sandrock Gardens LLC, who are willing to meet with homeowners to follow up on the survey. They even offered to send the survey to ABC13, but that hasn’t arrived yet, as of Friday afternoon.

The developers claim they are changing the neighborhood for the better, and while they aim to be good neighbours, they said they have a right to reclaim the land.

Brannon, who said she doesn’t plan on letting it go that easy, will run a new survey at her expense.

“You have so much land! Why do you take from me? Why do you take my piece?” Brannon said.

She also told ABC13 that the developers tracked them down again and told her they would not take her land after reaching out to us, but Sandrock Gardens said she never said that.

For their part, the developers said they are happy to visit the land and check the survey again, but plan to move forward if the survey shows anyone’s fence has crossed the property line.
